We suggest a new democratic decision-making (or recommendation-making) device for divided societies that may be added to the toolkit. Imaginative Policy Surveys in seek combine advantages of conventional attitude surveys (ability generalise wider population) with some deliberative mini-publics (citizens learn about policy options and consider perspective members ethno-national out-group). consist survey design two features: videos providing information arguments an imagined dialogue out-group member. test feasibility, effect perceived legitimacy deeply context Northern Ireland, drawing on evidence from experiments. conclude are feasible, have slight positive pro-compromise effect, legitimate mechanism equal extent by rival groups.
